Okay, what is all the hype about this book and this guy Jefferson Bethke?! Well, I wanted to know so I started digging. I'm so glad I did because I found a gold mine. I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy just to blog about and share my thoughts on the book!
Here's the skinny:
So this "messed up 23 year old dude" (as he describes himself) posts this You Tube Video:
The video totally goes viral and is instantly popular amongst a younger urban generation because the unique way of sharing his message and his raw perspective just has folks genuinely drawn in to something that they may have:
- Never really understood
- Been forced to believe growing up...it became their default, but now they don't even really know why
- Had a misconception of and have been jaded by so called "religious" people.
- Given up on because someone made them think they weren't good enough
- Thought they tried already and it didn't work
- Thought they already knew about and felt strong "enough" in their faith.
- Thought was just stupid, irrelevant, and not current.
The curiosity and demand for more that came about from this video resulted in more intriguing videos from Jeff Bethke about getting right with Jesus on specific topics like idolatry, art, sex, tatoos, relationships, marriage, music, and more. Now, Bethke is releasing his first book that expands on his messages.
His new book is full of eloquent explanations and deep concepts to think about regarding what the bible is trying to say to us and encourages balancing out our own interpretations to make sure they line up with focus on getting more of God rather than just pursuing His stuff.
Before you decide, "Oh great, just another person on a Jesus rant..." You may want to at least watch the video and see for yourself why Bethke's message has gotten so much attention and/or read the book which was among Amazons best selling books before it was even released!
One of my favorite quotes from the book is:
The biggest difference between religious people and gospel-loving people is that religious people see certain people as the enemies, when Jesus-followers see sin as the enemy. He goes on to share the last time he checked, he was his own worst enemy..."No one has caused me more grief, pain, or heartache than I have. The Bible rarely tells me to fight against someone who doesn’t believe what I believe, but it frequently tells me to fight against my sin and the disease in me that’s drawing me away from Jesus."
He gets gritty and real as he shares some of his own very personal battles (past and current) and he isn't preachy, but rather just honest, humble, and straight forward about his own experiences. He shares some valid examples and findings that the reader can research on their own and he says enough to make you go deeper within yourself.
What it comes down to is you...how are you walking with Him and can you really back up and understand what you believe or don't believe about Jesus? If you don't believe anything or don't really feel like you know why you do believe certain things you've learned growing up, then hopefully this book can shed some light on your perspective for yourself or of those who have a different view than you.
Something I really appreciate about the book is that at the end of each chapter there are discussion questions that you can do alone or with a group (or one other person) who is also reading the book with you. The questions allow for some deep profound thought and discussion as well as an opportunity to just be real with yourself about where you are at with Jesus, church, and religion.
I believe this book has something for everyone and is a great start to figuring out how to strengthen your walk or even just find your walk with Jesus if you aren't sure. Also, like I said its great for non-believers too to get a more informed point of view on the issues surrounding religion.
That said, This book gets 2 thumbs up from Busy Fams!
